Childhood Friends

Older now and looking back

On life and family

What was before is always there

Always a part of me

Mom and Dad each had their way

of knowing what to do

there was meaning in the words they’d say

One always knew them true

My childhood was a novel

With characters abound

It was more than an adventure

It had a look, it had a sound

I remember every summer

Under starry southern nights

Kick the can and country roads

And just for fun some fights

The Smiths next door were neighbors

and way much more than friends

Richard was and will always be

A legend with no end

Russell Hobbs was a crazy friend

Who could frighten anyone

But to know him was to understand

It was all about the fun

Fireworks and bb guns

A small town neighborhood

A bunch a kids we never did

What MaMa thought we should

We were young with life ahead

There was nothing we could lose

Even if there was a choice

Still each other we would choose

We started young and through the years

Our stories all were told

From little league to kissing girls

Growing up not growing old

I often think of all of them

I wonder where they are

I wonder if their memories

Like mine are never far
